Dr. David Hochman is a Colon and Rectal surgeon and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Manitoba Max Rady College of Medicine
Education
Dr. Hochman completed medical school at the University of Manitoba in 2000. He then completed his training in General Surgery at the University of Alberta in 2005. In 2006, he trained as a Fellow in Colon and Rectal surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Hochman returned to Winnipeg in 2006 as a specialist in Colon and Rectal Surgery. He is a Malignant Disease Specialist with CancerCare Manitoba.
Clinical Interest
Dr. Hochman’s surgical practice encompasses complex colorectal disease, laparoscopic colorectal surgery, complex endoscopy, and Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM). He treats the full range of colorectal disease including colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and anorectal disorders. He is a pioneer in Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM).
Dr. Hochman served as both the Site Medical Director of Surgery and the Section Lead of General Surgery at the Victoria Hospital from 2008 through 2018. He also served as interim Chief Medical Officer at the Victoria Hospital in 2018.
Dr. Hochman is actively involved in both the University of Manitoba Medical School and the General Surgery Residency Program, and has been nominated for numerous mentorship, clinical teaching, and professionalism awards. Dr. Hochman was presented the Award for Teaching Excellence by the General Surgery residents in 2008, and the Award for Patient Advocacy by the Manitoba Medical Students' Association in 2017.
He was the Manitoba surgical representative to the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC) Committee that developed the Pan Canadian Standards for Rectal Cancer Surgery.
Research
Dr. Hochman has published dozens of peer reviewed research papers focused on surgical quality and delivery of care. He is keenly interested in surgical innovation and improvement. He has taught courses locally and nationally in laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery and Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery.
